Vietnamese rice companies say it’s unlikely that Chinese rice has entered the local market, easing concerns about a fake rice made from plastic which was reportedly being sold in China.

On Saturday, Tuoi Tre newspaper cited rice traders as saying that Vietnam has an ample rice supply.

They also said as local prices are now low, so there is no chance that Chinese exporters would succeed in exporting Chinese grain.

A Korea Times report on Thursday cited a weekly newspaper in Hong Kong as saying some distributors are selling fake rice in China’s Shaanxi Province.

The rice is a mixture of potatoes, sweet potatoes and plastic. A cooking expert was quoted as saying that the synthetic resin in the rice is “very harmful to the human body.”

Chinese authorities have not commented on the issue.
