Hanoi police announced Saturday that Dao Truc Thuc, editor-in-chief of Kiem Tra (Inspection) magazine, had taken his own life.

The magazine served as the official mouthpiece of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Inspection –essentially, the internal affairs division of Vietnam’s Communist Party.

First published in August, 1995, Kiem Tra magazine mainly covered Party policy and anti-corruption news.

According to the police, Thuc arrived at his office at 6:20 p.m. on Thursday evening.

He didn’t return home that night and failed to answer phone calls, prompting his wife, Mai Thu Ha, to visit his office the next morning.

Ha and other magazine staffers entered Thuc’s office to discover him dead.

Police said Thuc died from two self-inflicted knife wounds to the chest.

“On his desk, we found a blood-stained knife and a letter reading: ‘I ended my life by myself’,” Phap Luat TPHCM (HCMC Law) newspaper quoted a police source as saying.
