One of more than 20 angry elephants hit a police officer to death in a commune in Ea Sup District, Dak Lak Province last Saturday.

The victim was 42-year-old Cao Quang Canh, a police officer in Ea Le Commune, said Huynh Trung Luan, director of the Dak Lak Elephant Conservation Center.

On October 29 Canh and two other men came into a forest in the center to dig up apricot trees and bring them home.

When the men were on the way out of the center, they came across a herd of more than 20 wild elephants in forest subzone 276 in Ya T’Mot commune.

The animals got angry seeing three men carry apricot trees and then attacked them. Canh was knocked down to the ground by one of the elephants and died on the spot, while his two companions managed to escape.

In August two elephants of the herd were killed  by poachers in Yok Don National Park, which is located in the province's Buon Don and Ea Sup districts. After the killing, the herd has lived in Ya T’Mot and often showed signs of panic, the center said.

Ea Sup district authorities said they would warn local residents about the danger from the herd of elephants.
