Thanh Hoa: 74 bombs and mines unearthed in garden

While mining land in a garden in Trieu Son district of the central province of Thanh Hoa, local residents found 74 bombs and mines left from the wartime.

On March 23, sappers of the military command of Trieu Son district checked the garden and transported 74 bombs and land mines to a safe location for destruction.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Quoc Khanh, Deputy Head of the military command of Trieu Son district, said at first they were reported by locals of the discovery of two bombs in the garden. Sappers were sent to the site and they found out an additional 72 mines, which were about two meters underground, in an area of about two square meters.

According to Khanh, the two bombs and 72 mines were left from the Vietnam War and they could still cause damage. The sappers spent nearly seven hours to move the bombs and mines to the explosive ground in Van Son commune for defusing.

Each bomb weighs about 225 kg, over 2m long, with a diameter of 35cm to 40cm, produced by the U.S. The two bombs are located about 100 meters apart at a depth of 5-7 meters under the ground.
