The Ly Son Island in Quang Ngai province some days received the groups of travelers from all over the country who came to attend the troop ceremony. After the ships left carrying the travelers away, rubbish was seen covering the entire sea surface.

At the wharf in An Vinh commune, the bad odor from the rubbish discharged by local people and travelers to the sea has “attacked” visitors. A lot of plastic bags with rubbish inside were seen floating on the water surface. The same things were seen in the coastal areas in An Hai and An Vinh communes.

Rubbish thrown away by travelers not only could be seen at canals or in bushes, but also at tourism sites. The area of the Hang and Duc Temples, the Thoi Loi Mountain has also been covered by the rubbish.

Nguyen Minh Thong, a tourist from the central city of Da Nang complained: “Ly Son Island is wonderful, but there is too much rubbish. The whole island was covered with the rubbish”.

“I cannot understand why people still discharge rubbish in such beautiful land areas,” he added.

Tran Ngoc Nguyen, Chair of the Ly Son Island, the pollution on the island has become more and more serious. “The local authorities have applied drastic measures to persuade people and travelers not to leave litter and show local households how to treat rubbish themselves. However, these are just temporary measures,” he complained.

He went on to say that the district’s authorities have submitted to the provincial people’s committee the plan on developing a rubbish treatment plant with the estimated investment capital of VND140 billion. 

“Only when the plant is built and put into operation, the pollution on the island will be settled to the every root,” Nguyen said.

It’s still unclear when such a plant would be set up. For the time being, local people still have to live together with rubbish, while travelers come there to… see rubbish. 

Suoi Tien (the Fairy’s stream) in Phan Thiet City, called the “fairyland in the desert” is an attractive destination point for travelers. However, the fairy land has become more and more polluted.

The reporters, who were present there on April 21, could see with their eyes the litters on the two banks of the stream.

Pham Thi Nhu Quynh, 30, from HCM City complained that she was so excited about the trip to Ly Son, because she heard Suoi Tien is very wonderful. However, Quynh said she has disappointed with what she saw there, because there was too much litter.

Two other travelers, after discussing about whether to continue going upstream, decided to go back because they saw a black stream ahead.

The Bai Da Ong Dia and Cong Vien Doi Duong in Phan Thiet City, the two public beaches, have also been “attacked” the rubbish. 

Do Duy Khanh, a local resident , said the rock tops here are the favorite places for travelers and local people to gather and have parties. After eating, they throw rubbish right in those places.

The local authorities of Vung Tau City also complained that it is a big headache to deal with the rubbish left by travelers. Le Thanh Phong, Deputy Chair of the Ward No. 2, complained that despite the dust bins located everywhere in the locality, travelers still litter everywhere.
