Int’l U21 tourney: Vietnam 4-2 Malaysia

| VietNamNet Bridge - Vietnam trounced Malaysia 4-2 in the opening game of the International U21 Football Tournament at Tu Do stadium in Thua Thien-Hue city province on September 20.
Duc Thien put Vietnam ahead with a pinpoint volley after 6 minutes, but Malaysia’s hopeful Bin Saarani equalized for the visiting team two minutes later. Vietnamese players continued to put more pressure on their Malaysian rivals and their efforts paid off in the 18th minute when Van Khai slotted the ball past goalkeeper Selemat to give Vietnam a 2-1 lead. Five minutes later, Duc Thien scored another goal for Vietnam from a close range kick. However, Vietnamese players paid the price for their inexperience in international games in the 29th minute when Vivekandanthan broke the defence line, scoring a headed goal for Malaysia. In the second half, the Malaysian players came up with counterattacks with the aim of equalising the score, but they failed to take a turn for the better. Vietnam were gifted a penalty kick in the 64th minute and captain Van Khai did not miss the chance to complete the 4-2 victory for Vietnam. The tournament, sponsored by Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper, attracted Iran, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar and hosts Vietnam.
