VN to help Laos at 25th SEA Games; Indoor Games planned for November; Athletes to test in Asian Beach Games; HCM City dominate in basketball

Vietnam will partner with Laos to organise sports such as martial arts pencak silat, karate, taekwondo, wrestling, wushu, shuttlecock kicking, shooting, archery, finswimming and diving.

Vietnam will help Laos host the largest sports event in Southeast Asia — the 25th Southeast Asian Games (SEA) — next year, said vice chairman and general secretary of the Viet Nam Olympic Committee Hoang Vinh Giang.

At the meeting between Laos and the Viet Nam Olympic Committee in Hanoi on Sunday, Giang said that Vietnam will partner with Laos to organise sports such as martial arts pencak silat, karate, taekwondo, wrestling, wushu, shuttlecock kicking, shooting, archery, finswimming and diving.

Vietnam, which hosted the 22nd SEA Games in 2003, will send its experts to assist Laos in training its athletes.

At the meeting, vice chairman of the Lao Olympic Committee, Sengphone Phonh Amath, said that Laos would host 25 sports in next year’s SEA Games.

Indoor Games planned for November

Viet Nam Sports Administration is planning to propose to the Government that it hosts the third Asian Indoor Games on November 2-12 next year, just two months after the 25th Southeast Asian Games in Laos.

The third Indoor Games is expected to feature 24 events, including: athletics, short course swimming, fin swimming, dance sport, archery, petanque, wushu, boxing, shuttlecock kicking, sepak takraw (rattan ball kicking), sport aerobic, chess, Chinese chess (Xiangqi), futsal, Thai muay, Vietnamese traditional martial art (Vovinam), billiars&snooker, lion dance, kurash (central Asia wrestling), bowling, quick mountain climbing and kick boxing, and jujitsu (demonstration event).

Athletes to test in Asian Beach Games

A ceremony will be held in coastal Binh Thuan Province next Wednesday to send-off Vietnam’s squad to the Asian Beach Games held in Bali, Indonesia.

Vietnam will send 59 athletes to compete in nine sports including body-building, sepak takraw, pencak silat, marathon swimming, handball, beach soccer, beach volleyball, surfing and wind-surfing.

HCM City dominate in basketball

Host HCM City won the men’s and women’s titles at the National Basketball Championship, which closed on Sunday.

The men’s team cruised seven wins in a row in the second leg of the championship after clinching seven wins in the first leg.

Soc Trang and Air Force-Air Defence came in second and third place, respectively.

On the women’s side, HCM City, who finished second in the first leg, dethroned Yen Bai with a 107-71 win in the head-to-head round-robin, the first win for HCM City after a decade of domination by the Yen Bai team.
