Vietnamese shooters top region’s champs

VietNamNet BridgeVietnam stand top in the region in shooting as the country’s marksmen yesterday secured four gold medals out of five events at the 32nd South-east Asian Shooting Championship in Hanoi.

Hoang Trung Vinh scored his 675 points in the men’s 10m air pistol event to take the first gold of the day. Vinh left behind Gai Bin of Singapore with 673.8 points and Liao Chi of Chinese Taipei on 667.8.

The Vietnamese shooter pocketed his second gold later in the team event when he and two teammates Tran Quoc Cuong and Olympian Nguyen Manh Tuong scored 1,720 points to claim top place on the podium.

Despite an impressive effort, Singapore and Chinese Taipei failed to overthrow the leaders, maintaining second and third positions in the individual event with 1,705 and 1,698 points, respectively.

Some minutes later, marksman Vu Thanh Hung also got a taste of victory as he clinched gold number three for Vietnam in the men’s 50m rifle three positions (knee, stand and prone).

Hung won with 1,245.5 points, followed by Kasmijan Bin Kimin of Singapore with 1,176.8 points. The bronze medal went to Phet Da Van of Laos with 1.103 points.

The hosts’ final gold was in the men’s 50m rifle three-position team event. Hung got the chance to sing the national anthem again with Pham Ngoc Thanh and Nguyen Tuan Nam as the trio scored 3,416 points, leaving second-placed Laos far behind with 2,991 points.

Vietnam’s gold run dried up in the skeet event, as Thai shooter Imprasertsuk Isarara pipped Vietnamese Nguyen Thi Duc Hanh to the post with 84 points. Hanh got silver with 83 and Singapore’s Lim Nee Hwee Jefz was third with 79.

Vietnam were leading the competition with 23 gold, 10 silver and three bronze medals yesterday, and are expected to be the final winner as the tournament wraps up today.

Second-placed Indonesia failed to win add any medals yesterday to their total of five golds and four silvers.

Chinese Taipei stood at third, pocketing four gold, two silver and five bronze medals.
