The World Youth Chess Championships 2008 will take place in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province today with the home team having an advantage with better international ratings.

Among 100 players of the host team, Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son with Elo ratings of 2583 and 2567 respectively, are strong gold medal hopes.

They are joined by Hoang Thi Nhu Y (Elo rating 2127) who will compete in the girls’ U16 category.

This year’s event has attracted nearly 900 players from more than 70 countries and territories.

As Liem and Son are international grand masters with high Elo ratings, they have been seeded second and third, which gives them anadvantage because they will compete against players midway in the ranking list.

If there’s no change in the final minutes, Liem will meet 37th seed Austrian Poetz Florian and Son will take on 38th seed Czech Ponizil Cyril in their first games.

The 12th seeded Y will probably play against 55th seed Sri Lankan Madushani in the first match.
