VietNamNet BridgeThere was no doubt that Hoang Long Long An would wow spectators at the HCM City International Volleyball Tournament after a solid performance on Tuesday against Viet Steel.

Solid steel: Hoang Long Long An players (in white) jump up to block an attack by spiker Phuoc Nghia of Viet Steel during their match at the HCM City International Volleyball Tournament, the Sting Cup. Long An won 25-18, 25-9, 25-16.

Nothing could stop Long An on their way to the next round of the tournament, known as the Sting Cup, including Viet Steel who has a reputation as one of the top teams in recent years.

Long An’s sharp attackers and strong defenders kept the visibly tired Viet Steel team from scoring many points in the first set. Only spiker Thanh Cong played well, scoring nine points for the trailing team. In the end his efforts weren’t enough to match Long An who proved their dominance with every play. Long An won the set 25-18.

A replacement of veteran setter Le Hong Huy by Kim Long in the second set did not improve matters for the trailing team. Long An quickly moved to finish the set 25-9.

Spikers Quang Khanh, Phuoc Tien and Van Tuan did not give Viet Steel any opportunity to return their attacks. Viet Steel players seemed confused by the repeated volleys and were unable to spin the competition in their favour. They lost 25-16 in the third set.

Long An secured the first spot to the semi-final round with three wins already, although two matches remain in this round.

In other matches of the day, Myanmar won their first game over Sri Lanka 3-0. Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima beat North Harbour from New Zealand 3-2.
