Minh out of Macau tournament

Nguyen Tien Minh lost 20-22, 13-21 to Malaysia’s Beng Hong Kuan in the third round of the Macau Grand Prix Gold on Thursday.

Minh, ranked 21 in the world and seeded No 10 at the Grand Prix, was outplayed by Beng who is 56 places lower in the world.

Minh was not the only seed to go out in the third round. World No 10 Andrew Smith of England, who was seeded 7th for Macau, lost 5-21, 21-16, 12-21 to Tommy Sugiato of Indonesia in just 47 minutes.

City set for swimming champs

The National Swimming and Fin Swimming Championship will be held at HCM City’s Phu Tho Swimming Club from October 11-19.

Around 107 divers from 14 teams will be competing for 32 medal sets, while 83 swimmers from 16 teams will compete for 40 medal sets.

Taekwondo artists get new vests

The Viet Nam Sports Administration plans to spend around VND7 billion (US$420,000) to equip national team members with electronic vests that will be used at the 2012 Olympics in London.

The World Taekwondo Federation-standard uniforms, which made their debut at the Asian Championship last year, make it easier to know when an athlete lands a blow.

When a fighter strikes the vest with enough force a signal is displayed on an electronic monitor. The main referee and four corner referees will award points for strikes to the head or face.

Vietnamese athletes will begin wearing the vests next year.
