VN gets set to wrestle free-style; VN footballers to play in Myanmar; T&T Group signs Cup contract; Volleyball women finish 5th

Viet Nam is sending three athletes to take part in the World Free Style Wrestling Championship in Tokyo on Saturday.

Wrestler Nguyen Thi Lua will compete in the women’s 48kg category, Tran Thi Hanh the women’s 55kg class and Nguyen Thi Tam the women’s 63kg category.

The trio will compete against rivals from 35 countries and territories including powerhouses China, Mongolia, South Korea and Belarus.

It is the second time Vietnamese wrestlers have participated in the event. Their best performance to date was a bronze medal last year.

The delegation left for Japan yesterday.

VN footballers to play in Myanmar

Viet Nam is to take part in a charity football match in Yangon, Myanmar, on November 11.

National members Thach Bao Khanh, Nguyen Phuoc Tu and Phan Van Tai Em are among the Southeast Asian football stars chosen to play against hosts Myanmar.

Money raised from the game will be used to improve football facilities following damage caused by typhoon Nargis in May. Victim’s of the storm who are living in Yangon will also receive aid.

T&T Group signs Cup contract

T&T Group chairman Do Quang Hien yesterday signed a contract with the Viet Nam Football Federation (VFF) to organise the T&T Cup 2008, which will be held later this month.

The international tournament, which was previously known as the Agribank Cup, is recognised by the Asian Football Confederation.

T&T will put-up around US$500,000 for the tournament, which will attract teams from Thailand, North Korea, Uzbekistan and hosts Viet Nam.

The T&T Cup, which runs from October 28 to November 1, will be held at My Dinh Stadium.

Volleyball women finish 5th

Viet Nam finished the Asian Women’s Volleyball Cup in third place after beating Chinese Taipei 25-15, 25-15, 25-18 on Tuesday in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. Earlier, Viet Nam beat Chinese Taipei in the group stage last week.

Viet Nam also defeated Malaysia in the playoff match 25-13, 25-7, 25-11. Earlier, they lost to Thailand and South Korea.

The Cup is a qualifying round for next year’s Grand prix. It is being organised for the first time by the Asian Volleyball Confederation. The five best teams from the top 12 from Asia, Europe and America will qualify for the finals.
