Best man wins: Vietnamese teenager Nguyen Hoang Thien plays a backhand to Thailand’s Pasawit Buraphatitha in the men’s final of the ITF’s Under-18 crown in southern Binh Duong Province last Saturday.

Thien, 13, had earlier knocked the top seed - Thailand’s Adirek Khandarnpinitvong - from top spot winning 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 in the semi-final last Friday, then cruised past thud seed Pasawit in the first set winning 6-4 last Saturday.

In the second set, the HCM City native lost momentum, leaving the Thai to dominate and was soon down 5-2, Thien got his second wind soon after and fought back, winning five straight games to take the set 7-5 and win the competition.

Thien faced several tough opponents on the way to claiming top spot, including South Korea’s Lee Tae-woo and seventh seed Kitibodee Singnil of Thailand.

A few hours after the final, Thien flew to Bahrain to prepare for the Asian U-14 Tennis Championships.

In the women’s final at Becamex court last Saturday, Upapong Kobkaknok of Thailand, the top seed, beat Vietnamese Tran Thi Lam Anh 7-5, 6-4 to take the title.

Earlier, the Thai player and her Vietnamese partner Huynh Phuong Dai Trang triumphed in the women’s doubles, while Vietnamese Quoc Bao and Anh Quoc took the men’s double title.
