Turkmenistan took home the International Ho Chi Minh City Football Cup after an emphatic 3-2 win over Vietnam at the city’s Thong Nhat Stadium Sunday.

The West Asian team went straight to the podium with two other wins over the Republic of Korea’s junior varsity squad in the opener last Tuesday and over Myanmar last Friday.

In contrast, the host team fell to the bottom after losing all three of their matches in the tournament. Sunday’s defeat was the sixth consecutive loss suffered by the Vietnamese football team since Portuguese coach Hendrique Calisto took charge this April.

The Vietnamese team started well and drew first blood just 16 minutes into the match.

However, Turkmenistan struck back just two minutes later. The weaknesses of the home team’s defenders and goalie made it easier for the visitors to score two more goals in the 81st and 87th minutes before the home team’s leading striker Cong Vinh reduced the winning margin.
