Viet Nam set to host World Youth Chess Champs

VietNamNet BridgeThe 2008 World Youth Chess Championships will be held in Vung Tau from October 19 to 31, the organizing board told the media on Thursday.

VN’s GM Le Quang Liem will compete in the Boys U-18 category.

The event has attracted more than 800 players and 900 officials and coaches from 75 countries and territories.

Viet Nam has entered 95 players in six categories, namely Under 8, U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16 and U-18.

The two golden boys of Viet Nam’s chess, Grandmasters Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Le Quang Liem, will compete in the Boys U-18 category. They will come up against some redoubtable rivals like GM David Howell and International Masters Ivan Saric, Emre Can and Jacek Tomczak from Europe.

The Girls U-18 category will feature some outstanding players like Woman GMs Katerina Nemcova, Valentina Gobulenko and Inna Agrest and Woman FIDE Master Kubra Ozturk from Europe and Asians WGM Anya Corke and WFMs Guliskhan Nakhbayeya and Preethi Rajkumar.

The organizers announced that preparations are almost complete. The players and officials will stay in 24 hotels rated 2-star upwards, and 170 volunteers have been enlisted to help the visitors.

Dang Tat Thang, general secretary of the Viet Nam Chess Federation, told the media that Viet Nam hopes to win one to two gold medals.
