Viet Nam benefited from vocal local support and wasted no time ratchetting up the pressure.

In the 20th minute of the match, Minh Phuong scored the first goal for the hosts. However, two minutes later the visitors’ captain levelled the score after a fault by a Vietnamese defender.

The Vietnamese team, who lost to South Korea’s student team 1-0 last Friday, were unchanged after the break. Viet Nam found their rhythm and applied intense pressure on the visitors, but to no avail.

Turkmenistan redoubled their offensive effort, which resulted in two more goals to the dismay of the home fans.

Viet Nam created numerous chances but it was only in the 89th minute that striker Cong Vinh succeeded in scoring the host team’s second goal.

The tournament, which made its debut in HCM City in 1995 as the Independence Cup, has attracted teams from Myanmar, Turkmenistan and Viet Nam, as a well as a student team from South Korea, who compete in a round-robin format.

Later this month Viet Nam will participate in the T&T Cup in Ha Noi and the ASEAN Football Federation-Suzuki Cup in December.
