The 18-year-old chess player has not had much success after his last ranking with a 2579 ELO rating.

Dang Tat Thang, General Secretary of Viet Nam Chess Federation (VCF), blames this on two major factors: coaching and training environment.

“Currently Son is being trained by a Russian chess senior master Svendchikov. However the result has not been really good,” Thang says. He attributes Son’s insipid recent showing on the coach’s probable failure to give “efficient tips”.

Son also has not had many chances to participate in international chess tournaments to practice and learn from practical experience, Thang says.

“Within the last three months, Son has played just four international tournaments and was able to grab a safe place in the top 10 of the World Junior Chess Championship 2008 with a 2,579 ELO rating. However, the experts have not been satisfied with this result, since in comparison with other international rivals, Truong Son lacks practical experiences from tournaments and as also convincing victories.”

Asked about the support from VCF, Thang says: “The two immediate missions are to find a better trainer for Son and schedule some training periods in foreign countries and in international championships. Besides, the federation will appeal to some local sponsors for sponsoring chess masters while they are training or competing in international championships.”

Another young Vietnamese chess player, 17-year-old Le Quang Liem, stayed safely in the nineteenth place in FIDE’s Top 20 with a 2,583 ELO rating. He is now the top-ranked Vietnamese chess player.
