Duc, who was not in the top three in the first two stages, and therefore no threat to the leading riders. This served to his advantage as no-one took notice along the 116km track from Ninh Thuan Province’s Phan Rang to Da Lat City of the Central Highland Province of Lam Dong, one of the toughest stages, with two passes to conquer.

Minh Tam of Sai Gon Plant Protection 2 was the first racer to defeat the 18km Ngoan Muc Pass, but he was not strong enough to keep up the performance on the 10km Prenn. He was the third to climb here.

“It was my mistake. I spent too much energy climbing the Ngoan Muc pass and then I was too exhausted to compete against the experienced Duc on Prenn,” said Minh Tam.

“However, I still have a chance to take the ’king of the mountain’ title if I win at the Phu Hiep pass in the next stage. I will try my best.”

Duc was not among the first ones to reach Ngoan Muc, but the An Giang Plant Protection cyclist was strongly supported by his teammates to win at Prenn which was also the finish line, with a time of 3 hours 38.08 minutes and an average speed of 31.9km per hour.

“I am really happy with the victory at this stage, letting me wear this yellow jersey. It’s a victory for the whole team as they supported me to beat young Tam to win,” Duc said.

He was followed by Pham Hoang Anh Tam of Hoc Mon team and Minh Tam came third.

Truong Nguyen Thanh Nhan kept the green jersey as the high points rider for three stage. He collected 23 points after yesterday’s race.

Today, the race will be from Da Lat to Bao Loc Town across 98km.
