VietNamNet Bridge - The Fansipan Climbing Competition with the participation of 95 Vietnamese athletes and some foreign tourists kicked off in Lao Cai province Friday.

The nice weather on “the Roof of Indochina” created a favourable condition for participants in the competition.

34 athletes took part in the women’s event. The defending champion Pham Thi Hien, who is also the champion of the National Marathon Championship 2008 conquered the mount and won the “climbing queen” title, while local climber Hang A Po finished first in the men’s event which drew the participation of 61 athletes. The first foreign athlete to reach the mount was Vu Sieu from China.

Located near Sa Pa in the Hoang Lien Son Mountain Range, Viet Nam’s Fansipan mountain is 3,143 meters high, the highest in Indochina.
