VietNamNet BridgeTruong Nguyen Thanh Nhan won the first stage of the Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Cycling Tournament which kicked off yesterday in HCM City.

The first stage from the southern metropolis to Phan Thiet City in Binh Thuan Province, at 167km, saw 74 racers from 15 local team and one from Laos.

At 20km from the start, 23 cyclists pulled a head of the group. They included eight competitors from Sai Gon Plan Protection 1 and 2. The eight strong rivals were key in kicking up the speed of the race, with their efforts bringing them far ahead of their opponents.

Nhan, who was in the leading group right from the beginning, conserved his energy during the hot and long track, keeping him ahead and bringing him 13 sweet points for this stage.

In the last few kilometres, the lead was looking close between Nhan and Do Tuan Anh of Domesco Dong Thap, but Nhan passed his rival just a few seconds before the end.

Nhan took the green jersey for the most points, and the yellow jersey as the winner of the stage with a time of 4 hours 21.17 minutes. He reached an average speed of 38.35km per hour.

Tuan Anh came in second, followed by Le Van Duan of Sai Gon Plan Protection 1.

Although Sai Gon Plan Protection 1 had only Duan finish in the top three, other members made up the difference and brought the team on top of the team event, dominating with a time of 13:03.51.

Sai Gon Plan Protection 2 came second with just 48 seconds more.

The two teams proved their power right at the first stage, leaving their rivals far behind.

Vinh Long team stood third, finishing at 13:21.43. They and other teams will have a hard time narrowing the gap of more than 16 minutes with the two leaders.

According to organisers, the top place for the team event is now a competition between Sai Gon Plan Protection 1 and 2.

Today, racers will take part in the second stage running from Phan Thiet to Ninh Thuan Province’s Phan Rang City along 157km.

The 11th Nam Ky Khoi Nghia tournament consists of five stages with a total of 705km from HCM City to Bao Loc District in Lam Dong Province from November 18-22.
