VietNamNet BridgeThe Viet Nam men’s team have gained five wins, two draws and two losses in the on-going Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany.

Son and Liem are two young prodigy chess players.

The team, led by International Grand Masters (IGM) Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Le Quang Liem, Dao Thien Hai, Tu Hoang Thong and Nguyen Van Huy took wins over Singapore, Luxembourg, Japan, Iceland and the Netherlands before drawing with Cuba and China.

Viet Nam suffered losses to Ukraine and England.

Son and Liem are two young prodigy chess players. Thus far in the competition Son has claimed 5.5 individual points after five games, while Liem clinched 6.5 points himself.

At 14 years and nine months, Son became the second youngest IGM in world chess history. The youngest person ever awarded the prestigious title was French born Etienne Bacrot, who became a Grand Master in March 1997 when he was just 14 years and two months old.

Liem earned the IGM title at age 15 right after the Chess Olympiad ended in Turin in 2006.

His most successful year to date was 2005, when he took home an individual gold and a team silver at the Asian Chess Championship.

The Vietnamese will compete at their best in their final 10th and 11th round games of the championship today.

Chess has become one of Viet Nam’s strongest sports at several international and regional competitions.
