Amateur golf tournament offers big prizes to winners; U19 girls guaranteed spot in Asian Championship; VFF to sign new sponsorship deal with Nike

Organisers expect to have about 200 amateur competitors who will vie in stroke play format based on their handicaps.

The Toyota Golf Tournament 2008 will take place at HCM City’s Thu Duc golf club on Saturday and Vinh Phuc Province’s Tam Dao club one week later for northern players.

Organisers expect to have about 200 amateur competitors who will vie in stroke play format based on their handicaps.

Winners of the tournament will receive a cash prize of VND3 billion (US$178,500).

There will also be two luxury cars awarded to players who get a hole-in-one.

U19 girls guaranteed spot in Asian Championship

Viet Nam ensured its spot in the Asian Women’s U19 Football Championship’s final round after beating the Philippines 11-0 in the fourth round of the qualifier on Tuesday in Indonesia.

Heavy rain could not stop the Vietnamese players, but the team got off to a slow start with only Phung Thi Nhung scoring a goal in the first half.

Striker Tran Thi Thu entered the field in the second half and heated things up with a hattrick for Viet Nam with goals in the 61st, 72nd and 81st minutes.

Nhung, with great assistance from Thu, scored three more goals. And Nguyen Thi Nguyet netted four times to complete the landslide third victory for Viet Nam at the tournament.

In the other games, Myanmar came from behind to beat Jordan 3-2, and South Korea set a record trouncing Singapore 24-0 with several balls slipping between their legs.

In the final match, Viet Nam will face Jordan and Myanmar will play South Korea today.

VFF to sign new sponsorship deal with Nike

The Viet Nam Football Federation (VFF) signed an understanding with Nike to provide clothes for national teams.

The US$5 million contract, which sets a record for Nike’s largest donation here yet, will last five years and start from next year.

The VFF will end its contract with traditional sponsor LiNing, a Chinese sportswear company, at the end of this year.

Nike is now sponsoring many regional teams including Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.

At December’s Asean Football, Federation Cup, Nike will provide official balls for the tournament.
