HCM City Open Student Volleyball tournament begins this Sunday; Hancocooking Can Tho invite Police coach to lead them next season; Vietnamese national team donates part of prize money to flood victims

The fourth HCM City Open Students Volleyball Tournament - Sting Cup 2008 - will have 25 universities, colleges and secondary schools from the southern region competing for the title.

The universities and schools in HCM City, Can Tho City and three provinces of Tay Ninh, Binh Duong and Dong Thap are sending 25 men’s and 14 women’s teams to play in the eight day tournament that opens this Sunday in the city.

All matches will be played at the Phan Dinh Phung Gymnasium, the HCM City teachers’ training College and Agriculture and Forestry College.

It is sponsored by PepsiCo Viet Nam, Berjaya Land Berhard and Philips.

Hancofood Can Tho invite Police coach to lead them next season

First Division team Hancofood Can Tho have invited former Ha Noi Police team coach Nguyen Van Nha to coach the team next season.

Chairman of Can Tho team, Do Minh Truong made the invitation. Nha, who helped Ha Noi Police team win the national football championship in 1984 as captain, retired as coach of the Hanoian team in 2003.

Can Tho hope to join the V-League, and have signed Sawieh Jonal from V-League champions Binh Duong, and Hoa Phat Ha Noi striker Das Silva to play next year.

Vietnamese national team donates part of prize money to flood victims

The Viet Nam national team gave US$2,000 from a cash-prize of $20,000 that the team won at the International Football Tournament - T&T Cup to people affected by severe flooding in Ha Noi earlier this month.

Viet Nam drew with Thailand 2-2 and North Korea 0-0 to come in second at the T&T Cup last week.

At a training session in Ha Noi on Wednesday, Portuguese coach Henrique Calisto voted for his fellow countryman Cristiano Ronaldo as the world best football player.

The coach and captain of FIFA recognised national teams vote for the world’s best player.
