VietNamNet BridgeNgo Quang Huy will go head-to-head with Nguyen Minh Quan in the National Top Tennis Players Championships’ final today in Ha Noi’s Sao Mai Court.

Ngo Quang Huy.

Tanimex’s Quang Huy came from behind to beat Bui Tri Nguyen from Becamex Binh Duong 7-6, 6-0 in yesterday’s semi-final match.

Nguyen started strong, dominating the first set with balls too high for Huy - the country’s No 2 seed.

Nguyen lifted the score to 3-0 and 4-1 and looked sure to take the set. But Huy made a surprise comeback and levelled the set on superb break points, out-volleying the sprawling Nguyen at the net.

Huy levelled 6-6, forcing a tie-break which he won easily.

HCM City-based Huy put in a trojan performance in the second set, showing spectacular endurance and accuracy. He took three break points and won easily over his dispirited rival - still reeling from his first set defeat.

In the earlier semi-final, No 1 seed Minh Quan beat Nguyen Hoang Thien 6-1, 6-0.

Thien made his tournament debut in the follow-up to his much talked-about success in Asia. The 13-year-old took gold at the Asian U14 Tennis Championship in India last month.

It wasn’t enough to carry him through on the day though. Quan’s strength and experience proved too much for the newcomer.

Quan lost one game in the first set while Thien seemed fresh and confident after a powerful quarter-final victory, but things soon changed. Quan lifted the pace to pocket the rest five and the second set, wiping out Thien.

On the women’s side, Huynh Mai Huynh of HCM City breezed through to the final, taking out Tam Hao of Tanimex 6-3, 6-2 in the first semi-final match.

Huynh will be meeting Hanoian Nguyen Thuy Dung in the final. Dung made it to the final after beating Tran Lam Anh from HCM City in the second semi-final 6-2, 7-5.

Dung got stuck in Thailand and was lucky to make it out in time for the game. She travelled by road through Cambodia with her parents, arriving in Ha Noi a day before the opening ceremony.

She has spent the past two years training in Thailand honing her skills and is now ranked 657th in the International Tennis Federation’s list.
