VietNamNet Bridge - Almost 340 masters, instructors, practitioners and students of Japanese martial art Aikido from 10 localities across the country and 8 nations and territories performed the art at the Trinh Hoai Duc Competition House in Hanoi December 13.

According to deputy chairman of Hanoi Aikido Club Bui Hoang Lan, besides Vietnamese practitioners, there are some 40 foreign masters and instructors from Japan , Hong Kong , Thailand , Malaysia and the Unite State s . Especially, ASEAN Aikido Association’s chairman Shihan Fukakusa Motohiro and Malaysia Aikido Association’s chairman Shiha Yamada Jun also performed the martial art’s expert techniques.

The event is the biggest ever Aikido performance in Hanoi , said Deputy director of Hanoi ’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Department Nguyen Manh Hung. It is part of the International Aikido Seminar and Demonstration – Hanoi Open 2008, which is being held to celebrate the 35 th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan , he said.

Aikido is a synthesis of Morihei Ueshiba’s studies on martial arts, philosophy, and religion. Aikido now attracts more than 20 million practitioners across the world.

Since its introduction in Vietnam 50 years ago, Aikido has developed in many cities and provinces of the country such as Ho Chi Minh City , Hanoi , An Giang, Khanh Hoa, Binh Duong, Lam Dong and Dong Nai. Hanoi , in particular, has almost 1,000 practitioners in 8 Aikido clubs.
