Nguyen Ngoc Thanh triumphed in the men’s karate kumite (combat) open event by trouncing Yellovin Prasetyo Piscessa from Indonesia 8-3 in the final match.

His victory was a big encouragement to other athletes later in the day.

Nguyen Thi Hai Yen, who is a Viet Nam national member, tied Indonesian Puspita Triana Gustin 3-3 in the women’s over-60kg category. Yen, who expressed her positive spirit during their fight, ended up taking the gold medal.

The only participant who failed in the final match yesterday was Luong Thuy Duong. She lost in the women’s over-60kg class, 0-2 to Atik Wahyuningsih from Indonesia.

In taekwondo, Nguyen Trong Cuong defeated Marlon G Avenido of the Philippines 2-1 to take the crown of the men’s mid-weight event.

His female teammate Van Thi Kim Thu later added one gold in the women’s fin class after beating host Nurul Asfahlina 3-1.

The last gold for Viet Nam in martial art competitions went to Nghiem Thu Huyen, who beat Indonesian Nurul Fadilah 3-0 in the women’s light weight pool.

On Wednesday, Vietnamese top swimmer Nguyen Huu Viet broke a Games record in the men’s 100m breaststroke event with a time of 1 minutes 3.38 seconds. The old record of 1:05.85 was made by Radomuos Matjiur in 2006.

This was a new record for Viet Nam. The old record of 1:3.58 was made by Viet Nam at the national swimming championship last year.

After eight days of competition, Viet Nam grabbed 27 gold, 19 silvers and 16 bronzes. Malaysia took top place with 49 gold, 45 silver and 37 bronze medals. With only a few events in the remaining two days of competition, no one can catch up with them.

Indonesia passed Thailand in the ranking table to take third place. The two sides both have 20 golds, but Indonesia ranks higher thanks to 33 silver medals compared to the 18 Thailand has won.

The 11-day tournament was kicked off on December 11 and will close on December 21. It has attracted hundreds of competitors from 10 countries, who are competing for medals in 22 sports.
