VietNamNet BridgeNguyen Dinh Toan and Nguyen Minh Tu bagged a gold medal in the mixed doubles of the World Taekwondo Performance (Poomsea) Championships in Ankara, Turkey over the weekend.

The Hanoian duo grappled with powerful opponents from Spain, Turkey and Italian on their way to victory.

Earlier, Toan took silver in the men’s singles, just behind South Korea’s Kim Bo-Hyeon.

“The gold medal won by the Hanoian duo was a result of their commitment in competition and training,” said head of the taekwondo section of the National Sports Administration, Vu Xuan Thanh.

“Vietnamese athletes will do better if they receive further investment for most local sports departments,” he said.

Vietnamese taekwondo martial artists have an impressive Olympic record. Tran Hieu Ngan won the country’s first Olympic silver in the women’s under-57kg in Sydney. Dinh Thanh Long won the country’s first bronze in the men’s under-58kg at the World Taekwondo Championships in Madrid in 2005.

Three Vietnamese taekwondo martial artists qualified for the Beijing Olympics. But after tough Asian Zone qualifying rounds, they failed to bring home a medal.
