The Hai Phong-born swimmer whizzed past competition in the men’s 200m breaststroke, clocking a record-time of 2 minutes and 21.91. This smashed the 2006 record by over five seconds.

On Dec.18, Viet also triumphed in the men’s 50m breaststroke, finishing with a time of 29.25 seconds, beating the older record by almost a second.

The swimming stalwart left jaws open as when he finished the men’s 100m breaststroke event with a record time of 1:3.38 – beating Radomuos Matjiur’s 2006 record by nearly two seconds.

Martial art is Vietnam ’s sporting forte, so gold medal wins at this years Malaysia Games came as no surprise.

Pencak silat artists made it a golden day for Vietnam with seven gold medals in total of 12 combat finals.

Truong Van Mao took the first one by beating Nowo Tri Purnomo of Indonesia 5-0 in the men’s class F.

Le Si Kien followed him to the top of the podium after his 5-0 victory over Hamda Zakaria from Malaysia in men’s class H.

Ha Anh Vu won 5-0 in the men’s class B after trouncing host rival Mohammad Faizul Nasir.

National member Le Ngoc Tan battled it out with Malaysia Amir Ikram Rahim in a 4-1 victory for the men’s class D.

His teammate Nguyen Thanh Huyen pocketed the fifth gold of the day in the men’s class G, beating Mohammad Saiful Shafiq Rahmat of Malaysia 4-1.

On the women’s side, Nguyen Thi Phuong Anh wore gold after her 3-2 win over Indonesia Fanny Arianty in the women’s class D.

Le Thi Phi Nga followed suit by knocking-out Malaysia ’s Maisarah Rahim 5-0 in the women’s class A.

Other finalists included Tran Thi Mai Lan, who lost 0-5 to Wan Nurul Hidayu, and Ha Anh Tuan who took a 2-3 beating in the men’s class A by Mohammad Asuha Sacdan
