VN’s top badminton player triumphs at open tourney

| VietNamNet Bridge - Vietnam’s No. 1 and the world’s No. 17 Nguyen Tien Minh has successfully proved his estate by winning the championship at the international badminton tournament, Vietnam Open 2008.
Minh, who is seeded No. 1 at the tourney, beat the second-seeded Chan Yan Kit from Hong Kong 2-0 in the final at the Ho Chi Minh City-based Phan Dinh Phung competition hall on Dec. 7. The title ended a year of success for Minh who had previously secured a berth at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and triumphed at the Robot Vietnam Challenge 2008 in the city last July. “With the target of advancing to the world top 10, this victory helps me become more confident at the upcoming Grand-Prix,” Minh said. In addition to 3,750 USD for the championship, Minh pocketed close to 50 million VND presented by his fans. In the women’s single final, Xing Aiying, the world’s No. 37 and the tourney’s top seed, unexpectedly lost 1-2 to her fellow country-woman Zhang Beiwen. Indonesia’s duos Tantowi-Irawati and Irawati-Jauhari brought home the titles in the mixed and women’s double events, respectively, while the men’s double championship came to Tan Fook Chong and Wan Wah Lee from Malaysia . This year’s tournament attracted nearly 160 players from 11 countries and territories, including more than 40 Vietnamese athletes, who competed for prizes worth 50,000 USD in total. (Source: VNA) |
