VietNamNet Bridge – Two weeks after their victory at the AFF Cup 2008, the national football squad is now in a sensitive circumstance: not fully receiving bonuses to share with team members.

VFF Chairman Nguyen Trong Hy presented VND4 billion bonus to the national squad on January 7.

Both players and the Vice Chief of the national squad, Nguyen Lan Trung, begged the media to call for sponsors to quickly transfer bonus money as they promised to the team to share to members. The team planned to share bonus to all members before the match against Lebanon on January 14.

At a ceremony honoring the team in Hanoi on January 7, a dozen of companies stated to give bonuses to the team, valuing around VND 9.2 billion (US $541,100). Until now, the squad has received a half of the promised bonus, including VND 4 billion from the Vietnam Football Federation and VND 200 million from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

An official from the VFF complained “The bonus looks huge but it is very hard to fully receive it.”

On the night of victory, many big companies announced to grant high bonuses but they have kept quiet since then. Previously, the national team faced similar cases when sponsors just promised and neglected what they had said.

A VFF official revealed that after paying income tax, the highest bonus for national football players is VND 300 million, not VND 600 million as it was reported last week. Most of the players were disappointed in hearing this piece of information.

2008 was a good year for the VFF. The Federation earned a lot of profit from organizing two matches, Vietnam – Olympic Brazil and VietnamThailand under the AFF Cup. This year the national squad gained some titles: the AFF Cup Championship and Merdeka Cup Championship.
