Lookatvietnam – Almost 1,200 runners and walkers, including 450 students in Quang Nam and Da Nang, participated in the central coastal region’s first Terry Fox Run to raise money for cancer research.

The non-competitive event, which commenced in the morning despite threatening clouds and a wet course due to overnight rain, raised more than US$5,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation, a cancer-research trust founded in 1981 in honour of Canadian humanitarian and osteosarcoma victim Terry Fox.

Since 1997, the event had been held in HCM City and Ha Noi, and it was good to break the mold, said Jon Tomlinson, Montgomerie Links Viet Nam’s general manager.

“And it’s nice to break it here at Montgomerie Links, where the dramatic seaside setting makes running or walking only more enjoyable,” he added.

All proceeds, including the winning silent auction bid for a two-night stay in a pool villa at the nearby Nam Hai Beach Resort, were donated to the Viet Nam Cancer Research Centre in Ha Noi.

Organised by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CanCham), the run brought together expats living in Viet Nam, local residents and even tourists in the area, who negotiated the 4km-long cart path that winds through the golf club’s 70-plus-hectare property.
