Binh Duong up against ACB in Cup

Becamex Binh Duong and Ha Noi Asia Commercial Bank (ACB) have been drawn with powerful opponents at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup.

Binh Duong have won the V-League twice: in 2007 and 2008. The team will play in group H against Home United from Singapore and Valencia from the Maldives, and a team from Thailand or Indonesia, depending on which team wins the play-off next month.

Ha Noi ACB drew in group G with Eastern Athletic from Hong Kong, Chonburi from Thailand and the Malaysian team, Kedah.

The group competition will start on March 10 and close on May 19.

Last September, Binh Duong signed a two-year contract with Portuguese coach Francisco Vital.

The team have a clutch of stars including goalie Nguyen The Anh, ASEAN Football Championship winners Huynh Quang Thanh, Nguyen Vu Phong and Brazilian-born Alves Kesley, who has been playing in Viet Nam since 2004.

Young footballers test in Qatar

Three Vietnamese, Ngo Di Cu, Hoang An and Kien Trung are taking part in a one-month trials at Aspire Academy for Sport Excellence in Qatar for professional training in three years.

The announcement was made on the Viet Nam Football Federation website (www.vff.org.vn).

The trials are part of the “Football Dreams” project. The project is being jointly run by Viet Nam Football Federation and Aspire – an international youth football training centre in HCM City.

The programme is running in 12 countries. The three most talented kids in Viet Nam will be picked for the last test in Qatar. If chosen, they will compete against 30 children from the age of 13 from nine Africa countries and Paraguay.

The kids will be picked by coaches from Spanish Barcelona’s Youth Team.

Top training has been available for aspiring young footballers in Viet Nam since last September. At that time, the HCM City Football Federation, the former French footballer Dominique Rocheteau and the French Scavi Company set up the Scavi Rocheteau Young Football Training Centre at Thanh Long Sports Centre.
