Dung off to good start at ITF

Lookatvietnam – Top Vietnamese tennis player Nguyen Thuy Dung hopes her win at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Women’s Circuit Rancho Mirage in California, will raise her world tennis ranking.

Dung, 22, who climbed up to No 657 last year, knocked out France’s Karla Mraz, the tournament’s 6th seed, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the qualifying round on Monday.

However, the Hanoian-born player could not sustain her form, losing 6-1, 6-2 to Danielle Harmsen from the Netherlands in the main draw.

Dung started the US$25,000 tournament ranked at world 669th. She expects to lift her ranking this year’s ITF events.

The 22-year-old has been practising in Florida after two-years training in Thailand with Roger Federer’s former coach Diminik.

Dung, said her goal is to make it into the world’s top 500, which would allow her to enter bigger tournaments.

Dung’s family pays around $40,000 per year for a coach, accommodation and competition fees. The player also receives $600 a month from the Ha Noi Culture, Sports and Tourism Department to defray the cost of competing in Europe and Asia.
