A Ukrainian chess expert has been invited to train the national chess team, replacing Russian coach Svend Chikov, who has worked with the team for 14 years.

The Ukrainian coach, Vassily Mikhailov, was selected after he helped young chess player, Tran Minh Thang (Hanoi), to become the champion at the World Young Chess Tournament 2008.

Vassily Mikhailov will have a one-year contract (till December 2009) with a monthly pay of $1,500.

The Ukrainian coach and three Vietnamese assistants, Le Hong Duc, Lam Minh Chau and Tong Thai Hung, are training the national chess team, including seven male and three female players, at the National Sports Training Centre No.2.

Related to chess, International Grand Master Dao Thien Hai will say goodbye to Dong Thap province to join the Army team. He will play for the Army team at the upcoming National Chess Championship 2009, which will run from February 14-28 in Hanoi.
