According to coach Nguyen Kim Lan, the prestigious tournament will attract strong rivals from South Korea, China and Japan and will be a good training ground for Vietnamese athletes.

The team will take part in the 2009 World Games in China and the Asian Indoor Games at home in August.

Late last year, Viet Nam won a silver and bronze at the Pre-World Games in South Korea.

Viet Nam hands out invitations for nations to join Asian Indoor Games

Viet Nam has sent invitations to 45 countries and territories which are members of the Olympic Council of Asia to take part in the third Asian Indoor Games (AIG). The games will be hosted by Viet Nam from October 30 to November 8.

Athletes registration must be completed by April.

The organising board has already decided on locations for all competitions as well as accommodation for athletes. Many sports arenas have been revamped in preparation for the games.

The AIG, which will be held in Ha Noi, HCM City and selected provinces and cities in Viet Nam, is expected to attract the participation of 10,000 people, including 1,000 officials, over 5,000 athletes and coaches, and 2,000 reporters.

Half-marathon to be added to Tien Phong Newspaper’s event

There will be a new half-marathon event in Tien Phong (The Vanguard) newspaper’s marathon beginning this year, according to the Viet Nam Athletics Federation.

The new event is expected to attract huge participation, including foreign athletes who are sure to up the race’s tempo.

Since its Inaugural race in 1958, the Tien Phong newspaper marathon has been one of the biggest athletic events in Viet Nam.
