Top national cyclists began their year of training in preparation for the 25th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Laos this December yesterday. In the north, road race and terrain events teams cycled around Hoa Binh Province and in the south, the teams trained around HCM City.

Nikolai Kurkov, the coach from Kyrgyzstan set to train the road race team, could not come to HCM City to start his job due to personal reasons. However, he will fly to Viet Nam on March 2. Kurkov coaching efforts helped Krgyzstan’s national team clinch three gold medals at an international cycling tournament held in Malaysia in 1997. He then became the chief coach of the Egyptian team in 2007.

All health tasks, including doping tests, related to the third Asian Indoor Games (AIG) will be completed by September.

The location of the competitions have been chosen and for where participants will be housed. Many competition halls have been upgraded to prepare for the games. AIG events will be held around the country and are expected to attract the participation of over 5,000 athletes and coaches.

At the second AIG in Macau, about 1,800 athletes from 45 countries participated. Viet Nam finished 13th overall, with two golds, five silvers and 11 bronzes.

There are eight teams from around the country expected to participate in the competition. Outstanding players at the event may be chosen for the national team, which will compete in three international tournaments: the sixth World Championships, the 25th SEA Games and the 3rd Asian Indoor Games.

Players will take part in men’s and women’s singles, as well as men’s and women’s doubles.

The tournament is co-organised by the Sports Administration and the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
