LookAtVietnam – Top striker Le Cong Vinh is the only Vietnamese among 14 new players chosen to join the Australian Football League (A-League).

Thailand’s national team coach assistant Steve Darby made the final decisions and had the recommendation list published on The Sunday Morning Herald website.

Darby has coached at the club level in Singapore and Malaysia, and has strong connections in Viet Nam. He will assist compatriot Peter Reid for the duration of Thailand’s 2011 Asian Cup qualifying campaign.

Darby has said that Vinh has the speed, technique, skills and ability that make him a very competitive and modern player. He also has a uncanny ability to create chances for himself to score.

Vinh is the most well known Vietnamese footballer abroad. His two goals in the two-leg final match of the ASEAN Football Championship - AFF Suzuki Cup last December helped Viet Nam win the cup for the first time in 49 years.

Information about him has spread throughout the region and there have been features about him on ESPN and in the Football Asia magazine.

If Vinh earns a chance to play in the A-League, he would be the second Vietnamese player to play in tournaments outside of the country.

Le Huynh Duc, head coach of the SHB Da Nang team, played for Chongqing Lifan of China in 2001. Recently, Nguyen Viet Thang, member of Dong Tam Long An club, joined in a training course with Portugal’s Boavista, while former Sai Gon Port’s Luong Trung Tuan trained with Thailand Port.

Some say that Southeast Asia offers huge potential for A-League clubs to restock their squads, as long as they treat the players with respect.

The recent introduction of the three-plus-one rule by the Asian Football Confederation - designed to encourage the movement of Asian players across the region - has sparked a sudden interest in Australian players from clubs in South Korea and China.

The best Southeast Asian players won’t always come cheap. The Vietnamese league pays the highest wages in the region - the best players get about US$130,000 net a season. Vinh recently changed clubs for a $400,000 sign-on fee.
