The tournament - held for the first time in Viet Nam - is organised by Viet Nam Football Federation (VFF) and Budweiser, sponsors of English Premiership team Manchester United. It is set to draw 64 teams nationwide, who will compete in 16 groups in a round robin in Ha Noi and HCM City on April 18-26. The two top teams in each group will play in a knockout game for quarter-final berths.

The semi-finals, to be hosted at HCM City’s Thanh Long Sport Centre on May 1, will see the four best teams from qualifiers in Ha Noi and HCM City competing for a cash prize of US$1,000.

According to the organising committee, the tournament winner will face teams from Argentina, Britain and South Africa for the 16-national World 6v6 Champions at Old Trafford on May 25.

At the press conference in Ha Noi yesterday, VFF’s vice chairman Quang Vinh said the tournament aimed to promote football development in Viet Nam.

Annual hopes

The tourney will be played at six-a-side pitches at Ha Noi’s Water Resources College and Thanh Long Sport Centre following futsal (indoor football) rules.

Sponsor representatives said they hope the tournament will be organised annually in Viet Nam.

“The Budweiser 6v6 International Cup gives Vietnamese footballers the chance to play at Old Trafford - ’Theatre of Dreams’,” said Walter Blocker, CEO of Gannon, authorised distributor of Budweiser in Viet Nam.

He also said the World 6v6 Finals will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa next year - venue of the 2014 World Cup. The draw will be held in HCM City on April 16.

Teams from Viet Nam can register at www.budweiser.com.vn.

VFF failed to lure Manchester United to Viet Nam during their Asian tour earlier this year. However, VFF officials said they hope Manchester will come in 2010.
