Binh Dinh beat Quang Ninh 2-0 at home Saturday to leap from third to first place in Vietnam’s second-flight First Division.

The club, based at Quy Nhon Stadium in central Vietnam, was given the opportunity to move up when last week’s first and second place clubs, Tay Ninh and Huda Hue city respectively, both lost their round 5 games.

Tay Ninh, who was atop the table after round 4, fell to second place after a 1-3 loss to Can Tho. It was the squad’s first defeat in the season.

Can Tho, who sacked head coach Nguyen Van Nha after two losses and a tie in four games, took their second win under the guidance of the club’s managing director Vo Van Hung. The

Mekong Delta club moved to eighth place from 11th.

Ninh Binh’s new coach Nguyen Van Sy, brought in to save the club after a mediocre first four rounds, took the team to a 2-0 win at home over Huda Hue. The club jumped four places into third while Hue dropped two places to fourth.

Elsewhere in the Mekong Delta, Tien Giang grabbed a 3-0 win at home against An Giang to climb three places into fifth while pushing their rivals down two places to 12th.

Dong Nai, in fourth place after round 4, fell three places to sixth after Saturday’s 0-1 home defeat at the hands of Saigon United.

Dong Nai controlled the match through most of the game but failed to capitalize.

The win put Saigon United in 10th place, up two seats from last week.

Hoa Phat Hanoi was disappointed by a 1-1 home draw with underdog Quang Ngai at Hang Day Stadium.
