City swim to the lead at short course champs

HCM City took the medals lead when they bagged eleven golds, eleven silvers and six bronzes at the National Short Course Swimming Championships in Ha Noi yesterday.

The Da Nang team trailed behind, bagging five gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

Nguyen Huu Viet from Hai Phong broke the national record in the men’s 200m breast-stroke with a time in two minutes and 20.40 seconds yesterday.

Viet surpassed the old record of 2:21.56 set by Pham Anh Tuan from Ha Noi at the championship last year.

Hoang Quy Phuoc still dominates at the competition with three gold medals and a new national record on Thursday.

Phuoc, 13, beat Hanoian Do Huy Long in the men’s 50m freestyle by 11 milliseconds to set a new 23.76 record.

The young swimmer beat a record that was set three years ago. His success has earned him a call up from the national team to compete in the Southeast Asian Games in Laos this December.

An the 2006 championship in Ha Noi, Long, 21, set the record with a time of 23.89. On Thursday, Long surpassed his old record, coming in at 23.87, which earned him a silver medal.

HCM City athletes also dominated the women’s races.

Vo Thi Thanh Vy grabbed two golds in the women’s 100m and 800m freestyle. An Do Hanh and Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen added two more golds to the City’s coffers in the 50m butterfly and 100m medley respectively.
