The Golden Ball Award competition has 13 nominees, all of them members of the national football squad: Nguyen Minh Chau (Hai Phong), Doan Viet Cuong (Dong Thap), Phan Van Tai Em (Dong Tam Long An), Nguyen Quang Hai (Khanh Hoa), Nguyen Minh Phuong (Dong Tam Long An), Nguyen Vu Phong (Binh Duong), Duong Hong Son (T&T Hanoi), Le Tan Tai (Khanh Hoa), Le Phuoc Tu (The Cong), Vu Nhu Thanh, Huynh Quang Thanh (Binh Duong), Nguyen Viet Thang (Dong Tam Long An), and Le Cong Vinh (T&T Hanoi).

The organising board has announced the winners of the first stage of selection, namely Vu Phong, Nhu Thanh, Duong Hong Son and Cong Vinh.

The four winners in the first stage for the Best female footballers are Ngoc Cham, Dao Thi Mien (Hanoi), Kim Hong and Kieu Trinh (HCM City).

With 23 goals for Da Nang club in the V-League 2008, Almeida was voted as the Best foreign footballer in Vietnam for the second time. He received 110 out of 148 votes. This Brazilian striker has worked for Da Nang for three consecutive seasons and he is holds the record for number of goals in a football season in Vietnam. He scored 23 goals in 26 matches.

Pham Thanh Luong (Hanoi ACB) was voted as the Best young player 2008. Luong won 116 out of 148 votes.

The Golden Ball Award winner will be announced at a gala on March 24 in HCM City.
