LookAtVietnam – Hosts Vikoda Khanh Hoa had a bad day when both their teams were beaten on the opening day of the National Beach Volleyball Championship in Nha Trang yesterday.

With only two years of experience, of Khanh Hoa’s Tran Thuy Trang and Ngo Vo Thanh Loan lost to favourites Hong Bang University.

During the first set, they failed to combine as Hong Bang’s Nguyen Xuan Hoa and Mai Thi Hoa Chi soon took control and easily took the first set 21-14.

As one of the biggest centres of beach volleyball, the HCM City-based university fielded their strongest teams.

Khanh Hoa found some opposition weak points in the second set, disputed every point and led several times before levelling the score despite again failing to compete over the net. However a good defence covered most shots and they took the set when Thanh Loan pocketed two points with irresistible spikes.

The exertions of the set win seemed to tire the Khanh Hoa pair during the final set and from 5-all, Hong Bang rapidly took charge and raced away to 15-9.

On the men’s side, Khanh Hoa suffered a second loss when Tran Quoc Phong and Ho Ngoc Phat were trounced 2-0 by Nguyen Ba Quyen and Huynh Quoc Tinh, from Military Corps 4.

Many fans thought an upset was possible as Phong and Phat pushed Quyen and Tinh to 18-all in both sets. But like their female counterparts, they tired during the vital points and twice went down 19-21.

The national tournament attracted 13 men’s and 11 women’s teams. Teams are eliminated after two losses. The best advance to tomorrow’s semi-finals and Saturday’s final, which runs live on VTV3 channel from 7am.

After the championship, national members will prepare for the annual International Women’s Beach Volleyball Tournament in the Quang Ninh Province’s Tuan Chau Resort from April 4 to May 1.
