More than 100 athletes from 10 teams nationwide will participate in the National Petanque Championship, to be held at the Quan Ngua Sports Palace in Hanoi from March 24-31.

Most of the athletes, who gained high achievements in the 2008 Asian Petanque Championship, will compete in men’s and women’s singles, doubles and trios.

The tournament aims to help athletes prepare for upcoming events such as the 2009 Asian Petanque Championships, the third Asian Indoor Games, and the 25th SEA Games.

Vietnam’s petanque team has bagged many medals at the regional and Asian tournaments. However, it will encounter difficulties in winning high scores in the third Asian Indoor Games as the organising board eliminated the men’s and women’s doubles and trios.

Vietnam will host the third Asian Indoor Games next year.
