Cycling tourney offers big cash prize; Six tennis players head to Thailand; Petanque champs planned for capital; Match to be followed by celebration

This year’s Binh Duong Television International Cycling Tournament will offer total prize money of VND200 million (US$11,200), announced the event’s organising board.

The event has been recognised by the Viet Nam Cycling Federation as a national tournament. Only strong national teams of five cyclists each are invited to compete.

Three foreign teams from the Netherlands, Thailand, and Mongolia will also compete in the event, which will take place from March 22-29.

Six tennis players head to Thailand

Six members of HCM City’s Tanimex tennis including Minh Quan, Quang Huy, Thai Luan, Huu Vinh, Mai Huynh and Tam Hao, went to Thailand yesterday to participate in the annual PTT Tennis Tournament from today to March 21.

Quan and Huynh won the men’s and women’s championships at this tournament last year.

Petanque champs planned for capital

The National Petanque Championship is scheduled to take place at the Quan Ngua Sport Palace in Ha Noi from March 23-30.

The event is expected to draw 12 delegations from HCM City, Ha Noi, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, and Soc Trang, among others. Athletes will compete in nine events.

The contest is an occasion for the coaching staff to evaluate players before they travel to the Southeast Asian Games in Laos this December and the Asian Indoor Games in Viet Nam.

Soc Trang, who have three national squad members and have been coached by foreign experts, are championship favourites.

Match to be followed by celebration

Fun will fill the air of the Parkland Sports Field and Restaurant in District 2 in HCM City tomorrow when Belgium and the Netherlands play a friendly football match followed by a party.

The teams will be made up of Belgian and Dutch expatriates in the city, contending for the Prins&Dingemanse Cup under the organisation of the Beluxcham [Belgian and Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce] and the Dutch Business Association Vietnam.

One hundred and fifty kilogrammes of fresh mussels directly flown in from the Netherlands will star at the party following the event.

Children will be entertained separately at the nearby Spring Castle.

Tickets, priced at VND450,000 (US$26) for adults and VND200,000 ($11) for children under 12, are available at the Eurocham office at 49 Mac Dinh Chi Street, District 1.
