Wushu championship starts; Thien grabs two golds at champs; Ha Noi lead National Archery Cup; Calisto inspires young squad

The 2009 National Wushu Championship opened yesterday at HCM City’s Phan Dinh Phung Gymnasium with a record entry of nearly 300 athletes from 32 provinces and cities nationwide.

Over the next five days, the athletes will compete in two disciplines: taolu (routines) and sanshou (fights).

Ha Noi, with many national team members, is expected to defend its leading spot without much difficulty. HCM City has made considerable progress to be a strong contender for the second spot followed closely by the Police, the Army and Thai Nguyen teams.

Thien grabs two golds at champs

Teenager Nguyen Hoang Thien won two gold medals, in the boy’s singles and doubles events, at the U-14 Asian Junior Tennis Championships, which wrapped up in Indonesia on Monday.

At the singles finals, he crushed Thailand’s Koaykul Kirtin in two straight sets (6-2,6-1) to gain the title. At the semi-finals, Thien, who added two singles titles at the Asian U-14 Championships in Bahrain and the Asian Juniors Circuit Tennis Tournament in India, beat another Thai player, Wichaya Tongjaroenchaikul, 2-0.

In the doubles event, Thien and Syrian partner Amer Naow triumphed over Thai duo Koaykul Kirtin and Parl Rungseeborirak.

The annual event, held since 1995, attracted a 50 athletes from nine countries and regions.

Last October, Thien, from HCM City, climbed to the top of the Asian Tennis Federation’s U-14 rankings after winning the International Tennis Federation Under-18 crown in southern Binh Duong Province.

Ha Noi lead National Archery Cup

Ha Noi led the medals tally at the National Archery Cup, which finished on Monday at the Ha Noi-based National Sports Centre, with 23 golds, 11 silvers, and 11 bronze medals.

Phu Tho came in second with three gold medals. Hai Phong and Bac Can tied for third with one gold medal.

Calisto inspires young squad

National team coach Henrique Calisto wrung a good performance from the young squad of SHB Da Nang, who beat Dong Tam Long An 2-1 at Long An Stadium in 7th round of the V-League match on Sunday.

Calisto, who coached Dong Tam Long An to win V-League twice – in 2005 and 2006, will call up youngsters from Da Nang for the Olympic team if they sustain their form in V-League.
