Minh slips in world rankings; Champs feel heat in AII-Star; New shooting club to open

Nguyen Tien Minh.
Top national badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh will drop a few places on the world ranking table after losing at the Indian Super Series on Wednesday.

Minh, who currently stands at 19th, was beaten 15-21, 21-10, 18-21 by Tan Chun Seang from Malaysia.

Seang was ranked world No 73 and Minh’s loss was a surprise to fans and experts. Minh has defeated the rival twice in the past, at the England Super Series 2008 and the Singapore Open 2006.

Last year, Minh entered the tournament in the last round of 16, but this year he was eliminated in the round of 32, causing his world ranking to drop for sure.

Champs feel heat in AII-Star

Defending champion Sanest Khanh Hoa barely defeated Ben Tre 3-2 on the men’s group B at the National All-Star Volleyball Championships, held at Ha Tinh Province Gymnasium on Wednesday.

Ben Tre led the match’s first and second sets; however, with the efforts of attacker Ngo Van Kieu the defending champs were able to take the next three sets.

Khanh Hoa will compete against Golden Star-Border Gate for the second place prize in this group.

Earlier, Golden Star-Border Gate easily trounced Army Corps 4 3-0.

On the women’s side, VietsoPetro lost to Nam Dinh 2-3, while the Industrial and Commercial Bank lost to Military Signal Corps Command-Trust Bank 2-3.

In Phu Tho Gymnasium, hosts Bai Bang Paper Mill tackled Air Defence- Air Force 3-1.

New shooting club to open

A shooting club for business people will start up this year in an effort to professionalise the sport, according to the Viet Nam Shooting Federation.

It is expected the national team will get sponsorship from businesses before competing in the Southeast Asian Games in Laos in December.

Last week, the first shooting tournament for business people in collaboration with Ocean Bank was organised in Ha Noi.
