V-League champions Binh Duong are quietly confident of victory against Maldives’ club Valencia today in the 2009 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup despite their 1-2 away loss to Singapore’s Home United last week.

Coach Francisco Vital says his team will neither look at the visitors as underdogs nor be too cocky even though Valencia lost 1-3 at home to Thailand’s PEA last week.

However, the Portuguese tactician says there is no reason why his team won’t play well against a side from a country where the level of football is lower than Vietnam’s.

Additionally, Binh Duong need a win to keep their spirits up for the next V-League encounter with Dong Tam Long An, especially after having lost three times in four matches.

In Binh Duong’s match against the Maldives’ New Radiant in the 2008 Binh Duong Television Cup, the local team cruised to a 5-0 victory.

Even so, Vital warns, the Maldivian players are very strong. They just don’t play very well.

Binh Duong’s managing director, Tran Van Duong, is confident too.

“On paper, Binh Duong is better, and we want to regain our reputation after the recent defeats. Still, we won’t be too confident because Hoa Phat Hanoi lost 0-2 at home to the Maldives’ Victory Club two years ago while the home team was considered a better side,” Duong said.

Valencia’s coach Dzurjak Jozsef says that his team are not as good as the Thai or Vietnamese sides but they will try their best for a draw today anyway.

Meanwhile, Vietnam’s National Cup holders Hanoi ACB will play Hong Kong’s Eastern Athletic, who lost 1-4 to Thailand’s Chonburi FC last week, while the Vietnamese side will start the game in a confident mood after their 3-1 opening victory over Malaysia’s Kedah.
