Hanoi grabbed 20 gold medals to dominate the 2009 National Wushu Championship which wrapped up last Saturday at HCM City’s Phan Dinh Phung Gymnasium.

Ha Noi grabbed 20 gold medals to dominate the 2009 National Wushu Championship which wrapped up last Saturday at HCM City’s Phan Dinh Phung Gymnasium.

It also won five silvers and eight bronzes to top the medals tally.

HCM City finished second with eight golds and silvers each and 13 bronzes.

The Military were in third place with five golds, five silvers and nine bronzes.

In taolu (routines), internationals Vu Tra My and Vu Thuy Linh swept three gold medals each, helping Ha Noi win 13 golds in all.

Tra My won the jianshu (sword play) and qiangshu (spear play) events while Thuy Linh won golds in nandao (Southern broadsword) and Nangun (Southern staff) events.

Duo Linh and My took another gold in the duilian (set sparring) event.

Ha Noi also dominated at sanshou (combat), pocketing seven gold medals, while HCM City drew a blank.

The competition attracted 279 athletes from 32 teams who competed for 28 sets of medals in taolu and 16 in sanshou.

The national wushu team is set to take part in three major tournaments this year – the first Asian Martial Arts Games in Thailand, the Asian Indoor Games in Viet Nam and SEA Games in Laos.
