SLNA’s Dinh Dong scored the only goal for the host thanks to a pass by Viet Nam’s 2003 Golden Ball winner Pham Van Quyen at the 85th minute.

This goal brought three points to the former champions in the highly anticipated match.

Some 400 security staff tried to keep peace at the match, as when the two sides met last season at the stadium one fan was killed and hundreds were injured when violence erupted after the final whistle.

Despite fears that bloody battles might once again erupt, the northern port city’s fans were permitted to support their team at Vinh Stadium.

At Hang Day Stadium yesterday, host T&T Ha Noi beat Nam Dinh 2-1. 2008 Bronze Ball winner Cong Vinh opened the first goal for T&T Ha Noi in the 21st minute. However, only six minutes later, Ngoc Lung evened the score for the visitors.

At the 42nd minute, the hosts grabbed a second goal to win thanks to Cao Sy Cuong’s efforts.

Despite the hot weather, a large number of fans with trumpets and drums created an animated atmosphere at Cao Lanh Stadium, encouraging the match between Dong Thap and The Cong.

In the first 28 minutes of the match, Dong Thap scored four goals thanks to the labours of Aniekan (3rd minute), Samson (19th minute) and Timothy (26th and 28th minute).

The nightmare didn’t end there for the visitors, The Cong, as Dong Thap’s Anh Tuan brought home a fifth goal in the 87th minute as well.

Elsewhere in round eight of V-League play yesterday, Thanh Hoa tied with Dong Tam Long An 1-1 at Thanh Hoa Stadium and two-time champions Hoang Anh Gia Lai lost to Khanh Hoa 1-0 at Nha Trang Stadium.

The eighth round also saw Da Nang draw against Binh Duong 1-1 at Chi Lang Stadium, while HCM City beat Military Zone 4 1-0 at Thong Nhat Stadium.

After this round, Da Nang temporarily lead the ranking tables with 16 points, and Thanh Hoa are at the bottom with six.
