LookAtVietnam – Defending champion and top seed Do Minh Quan eased past his compatriot Hoang Thanh Trung 6-3, 6-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the on-going Tanimex International Tennis Tournament 2009 in HCM City’s Tan Binh District yesterday.

Fourteen-year-old Vietnamese tennis hopeful, Nguyen Hoang Thien, however was stopped in the second round by third-seeded Si Yew Ming of Malaysia who prevailed 6-4, 6-1.

Quan, who had a first round bye, won after his opponent conceded the match in the second set, exhausted by the hot weather.

“I am very excited that many good players are competing in the tournament. However, this makes defending my title more difficult,” said Quan, who will attend the PTT tournament in Thailand next Saturday.

“Among foreign players, I admire Indonesian player Hendri Susilo Pramono,” Quan said. “He is one of the top players in the region now.”

Quan next takes on sixth seed Vithay Rasavady of Laos, who overcame Kong Pop Lertchai of Thailand 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.

The match between Thien and Si showcased the teenager’s progress despite his defeat. The first set went on serve until the seventh game, when Si, who has a very strong serve, got the breakthrough.

In the second set, Si continued making use of his serve to win six straight games to take the set after trailing in the first game, while Thien seemed to lose his strength.

“Thien played very well today, especially in the first set, which caused me a lot of difficulty,” Si said after the match.

“Thien is an extremely promising player. If he keeps practicing, he will be a top player in the future,” the Malaysian added.

Ngo Quang Huy also advanced to the quarter-final after a facile victory over Davin Chhith of Cambodia 6-0, 6-1. He will meet the winner of the match between second seed Hendri Susilo Pramono of Indonesia and Tran Thanh Hoang.

Le Quoc Khanh, who had to fight hard in his victory over Razlan Rawi of Malaysia, will now face Tran Duc Quynh, who stunned fourth seed Niro J. Pongsiri of Thailand 7-5, 6-4.
